Dreams really do come true, with four new titles to spring from the Dream realm. From the mind of Neil Gaiman comes a new world filled with dreams and nightmares, with all of his wondrous characters living together in a shared universe for a story unlike anything we’ve ever seen before.
A host of Vertigo mainstay characters kick off the relaunch of DC Vertigo with the new all-new Sandman Universe imprint, a line of books from the mind of New York Times #1 bestselling author Neil Gaiman and a gathering of some of the best and brightest talent in the comic industry today. The legendary author curates a new story unlike anything we’ve ever seen before and delivers a wonderful, yet frightening world filled with dreams, nightmares. He is joined by writers Simon Spurrier, Nalo Hopkinson, Dan Watters and Kat Howard, and art by Bilquis Evely, Dominike “Domo” Stanton, Max Fiumara, Sebastian Fiumara and Tom Fowler to tell the fantastic story of the larger than life characters that live together in a shared universe. This first issue, plotted by Gaiman, introduces the four new series that will make up the Sandman Universe, with each creative team setting up their own individual stories.
This special one-shot sets the stage for four series arriving this September and October, including THE DREAMING, HOUSE OF WHISPERS, LUCIFER and BOOKS OF MAGIC. The story is plotted by Gaiman and written by Spurrier, Hopkinson, Watters and Howard, featuring art by Bilquis Evely with cover art by Jae Lee, with variant covers by Sam Kieth, Jim Lee, David Mack, Dave McKean, P. THE SANDMAN UNIVERSE #1 Out Now!
Daniel the lord of the Dreaming, has disappeared and it has caused chaos in the kingdom of dreams. A rift between worlds has opened, revealing a space beyond the Dreaming. Meanwhile, a book from Lucien’s library of all the unwritten books ever dreamed is discovered by a group of children in the waking world, where it should not exist. Lucien calls for Matthew the Raven to seek out their master, Daniel, Lord of Dreams…
As Matthew flies across the Waking World and others, he finds a young boy named Timothy Hunter in London who, in his dreams, has become the world’s most powerful magician—but in his nightmares he is the world’s greatest villain, which will he become?…
Simultaneously a new House appears in the realm of the Dreaming, the House of Whispers, joining it’s sister houses, the already well known House of Secrets and House of Mystery. And its proprietor, a fortune-teller called Erzulie may play a part in all the mysterious goings on…
And elsewhere, Lucifer has fallen again, only this time he might be trapped in a Hell of his own design.
THE DREAMING – coming 5th September
There is a place where stories are born and gods walk among us. Today its walls lie slashed and bleeding. Dream of the Endless has abandoned his realm, and until he is found, its residents must protect its broken borders alone as the void is filled with danger and crimes of those who would take advantage of the absence. But the most senior storysmiths are tormented by invasive secrets, the warden Lucien is doubting his own mind—and beyond the gates something horrific waits with tooth and talon.
Only Dora, the monstress, finds opportunity in madness, stealing dreams for the highest bidder. But she has no idea how deep the danger lies.
Meanwhile, in Dream’s gallery, something new is growing…
HOUSE OF WHISPERS – coming 12th September
Welcome to the House of Dahomey, the houseboat of Erzulie Fréda, where the souls of Voodoo followers go when they sleep to beseech the flirtatious and tragic goddess to grant them their hearts’ desires and counsel them on their futures and fortunes. When you arrive, you’ll find a party is in full swing, filled with all kinds of fabulous and fierce folk, while fish fry and music blasts.
From her bayou, Erzulie scries upon the mortal realm and sees four human girls open a mysterious and magical journal filled with whispers and rumors that, if they spread, could cause a pandemic unlike any the Earth has seen, with the power to release Sopona, the loa lord of infectious disease and cousin to Erzulie, who is currently banned from the human plane.
But even the fearsome Erzulie cannot be of assistance when her dream river turns tumultuous, tossing her house from her realm and into another…
LUCIFER – coming 17th October
Lucifer is missing. Having embarked on a dangerous journey to find the mother of his abandoned son, the Prince of Lies finds himself imprisoned and crippled by mysterious forces who seek to torment him for their own terrible ends. Meanwhile: a car is crashed, two witches blind themselves, a tumor speaks its first words, and a perfectly good bowl of oatmeal is left to go cold.
BOOKS OF MAGIC – coming 24th October
Timothy Hunter may be destined to become the most powerful magician in the universe, but he’s still a London teenager, and having magical abilities complicates things more than it helps. It’s not like he can use magic to pass his exams, stop being bullied or convince his cute friend to date him. And while Tim’s trying to live his life, there are cultists who want to kill him, believing his power will eventually corrupt him into becoming a merciless mage. Oh, and those are the good guys. Luckily, his new substitute teacher is more than she appears, and may be able to help Tim discover the mystery behind the Books of Magic…
