NEWS WATCH: Third Installment of TRON Green-Lit by Disney

Following the 2010’s TRON LEGACY, the sequel to the 1982 sci-fi movie TRON, the yet-to-be-name third installment has been green-lighted by Disney.

The cult movie TRON (1982) is best known for its groundbreaking special effects and imaginative story starring Jeff Bridges, as a video game expert and programmer who is transported into the fantastic world inside a computer program. Tron was not the box office hit, meaning that it would be 28 years later until the sequel finally made it back to the big screen. Tron: Legacy, once again starred Bridges and original star Bruce Boxleitner along with series newcomers Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde   Legacy, directed by Joseph Kosinski, made $400 million worldwide, enough to generate interest in a sequel from Disney, which at one time considered making a Tron a streaming show headed up by filmmaker John Ridley.

In a story from The Hollywood Reporter, it was announced that the third TRON installment will be directed by Garth Davis, the filmmaker known for the Oscar-nominated Lion, Mary Magdalene, as well as episodes of Top of the Lake.  The same story also reported that Jared Leto had been attached to the long-gestating project since 2017.

Also, working on the film will be Jesse Wigutow, who has written the latest draft of the third Tron movie, and Leto will produce with Justin Springer and Emma Ludbrook. Davis, who is repped by UTA, also directed the 2018 feature.

No release date or title has been announced for the upcoming third TRON movie.
