Yesterday marked the 35th anniversary of the release of the 1984 sci-fi romp THE LAST STARFIGHTER which saw lead character Alex Rogan recruited by the Star League to defend the Frontier against Xur and the Ko-dan Armada.
In 2018 writer Gary Whitta made headlines when he tweeted that he was actually working on a sequel to the 80s sci-fi cult favorite with co-writer Jonathan Betuel as well as posting some pretty awesome concept art by artist Matt Allsop who was lead concept artist on ROGUE ONE.
Okay, probably shouldn’t show you this so early but here’s a little something I’ve been tinkering on with my co-writer Jonathan Betuel. You might recognize the ships. Thanks to the amazing Matt Allsopp (lead concept artist on ROGUE ONE) for creating these images for us. pic.twitter.com/CIobLYYRHk

Everything has been quiet since then till yesterday when Whitta retweeted a tweet celebrating the 35th anniversary of the release of the film with this:
And you’ve not seen the last of it… https://t.co/lRvXrpokea

Whitta then retweeted his original tweet from last year confirming he is still working on the sequel with Beteul. When the film will reach cinemas or even if, is uncertain, but in an era of nostalgia for all things of the ’80s (I am looking at you Stranger Things 3), there is certainly an appetite in the market.
Lots of people reacting like they had no idea I’ve been working on a sequel to THE LAST STARFIGHTER. Yup, writing and producing it with original writer/creator @jonbetuel. Check out some of the concept art I posted last year… https://t.co/V57nzwE0jp
