NEWS WATCH: Marvel’s ‘Black Widow’ Solo Movie Finds its Director

After an extensive search from Marvel, the highly anticipated Black Widow standalone film has tapped Cate Shortland to direct.

It took Marvel over half of a year and 70 potential candidates to find the right director for their solo Black Widow film featuring the popular lead, Scarlett Johansson, but they recently announced that they have found their person. Cate Shortland, an Australian director known for films such as Lore and the more recent Berlin Syndrome has been confirmed as the director.

Apparently, Shortland came at the suggestion of none other than Scarlett Johansson herself, after seeing her incredible use of a female lead in the film Lore. This will make for an interesting dynamic behind the camera, as it looks as though Marvel is giving the film the attention it really deserves. As a phase one character for Marvel’s overwhelmingly popular cinematic universe, a Black Widow standalone film is often considered long overdue by fans.

The most recent draft of the film was written by Jac Schaeffer, and it is reportedly set before the events of the first Avengers film, though not much else is currently known.

As always, check back for more information as it is released!
