John Constantine is set to join Legends of Tomorrow as a season four regular, but it looks like a past relationship may still be haunting him on board the Waverider.

Fans of DC’s John Constantine might finally see an accurate depiction of the occult detective’s bisexuality on the upcoming season of Legends of Tomorrow. According to a report from TVLine, the season will explore a former relationship of Constantine’s that occurred between the events of the Constantine series and the character’s debut in the Arrowverse.

While there wasn’t much information in the report, it details a past relationship with a man that carries tragic undertones which continue to haunt Constantine as he joins the Legends. While the series is no stranger to LGTBQ characters, it will certainly be exciting to see how they explore John Constantine’s bisexuality more in-depth. Considering the report also hints at the time frame of the relationship, occurring between his transition from NBC to the CW network, could his ex-boyfriend be someone we’ve already seen in the Arrowverse?

Matt Ryan’s John Constantine character quickly became a hit among fans, but his solo series on NBC was canceled after just one season. Now, he has made multiple guest appearances on CW’s Arrow as well as Legends of Tomorrow, where he will become a regular on season four. The actor also portrayed Constantine in the DC animated film Justice League: Dark and his own animated series on CW’s Seed streaming service titled Constantine: City of Demons.

“I had not really realized the fervor of [Constantine’s] fandom. I sort of accidentally discovered it. Honestly, we put him on the show just because we wanted him on the show. There’s no cynical calculation of trying to accumulate somebody else’s fans. I think we have fun with our characters. Having Tala Ashe on the show…she’s cool. If I just needed an adjective to describe her, she is a cool lady. I feel the same way about Constantine and Matt. We wanted just a counterpoint to our Legends…Personally, I can’t imagine Constantine having quarters on the Waverider. I want to keep him, Constantine. I don’t want to ever have a scene of him having to do his laundry because to me, guys like Constantine, they always have clean clothes. Who knows where they come from? I don’t want to see that scene.” – Phil Klemmer Legends of Tomorrow showrunner

“There’s always other elements of the character, and it’s great, but we can bring those to the fore in this show. That’s one thing I love about John is, he has so much going on and there’s so much more to explore that keeps you interested, and how they make of it in the character, as well. Because there are all these weird storylines that are being written over the years, that people always draw on them.” – Matt Ryan

John Constantine’s story continues (again) on Legends of Tomorrow season four set to debut on Monday, October 22nd at 9/8c on The CW. Check back for more information on both Legends of Tomorrow and the team’s newest member John Constantine as it releases. As always, we will be watching!
