NEWS WATCH: Live-Action ‘Gundam’ Film Coming from Legendary

Legendary Pictures along with Japan’s Sunrise Inc. have revealed plans for a live-action film based on the massively popular Mecha franchise, Gundam!

Anime Expo in Los Angeles brought some exciting news for fans of the Gundam franchise. At a small conference, Legendary Pictures and Sunrise Inc. revealed their plans to create a live-action film based on the Gundam franchise.

While most details are currently being kept under wraps, there was an official synopsis given for the original anime series and its setting in the “Universal Century”, which is considered the main timeline.

The original Gundam series is set in the Universal Century, an era in which humanity’s growing population has led people to emigrate to space colonies. Eventually, the people living in the colonies seek their autonomy and launch a war of independence against the people living on Earth. Through the tragedies and discord arising from this human conflict, not only the maturation of the main character but also the intentions of enemies and the surrounding people are sensitively depicted.

While this isn’t Gundam’s first introduction into Hollywood, with Legendary’s experience in grand-scale films such as Pacific Rim and the sequel, Dwayne Johnson’s Skyscraper, and the upcoming Godzilla: King of the Monsters film, it appears the franchise is in very capable hands!
