After almost a decade, the fan-favorite zombie comedy Zombieland is getting a sequel from Ruben Fleischer, who helmed the original.
Sony Pictures has finally announced a sequel to the hit film Zombieland, and the best part? They’ve reunited the original cast. Woody Harrelson, Emma Stone, Jesse Eisenberg and Abigail Breslin are all set to return for the highly anticipated Zombieland 2.
Not only have they reunited the original cast, but the film will be helmed by none other than Ruben Fleischer, who directed the first film as well as Sony’s upcoming Venom film. Writers Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese will also be returning, having written the original film as well as more recent hits like the Deadpool franchise.
Rumors of the sequel have circulated for years now, but filming is officially set to begin production in January with an expected release date in October 2019. Which is just in time for the original film’s 10th anniversary.
The original film only made just over $100 million worldwide at the box office, but it quickly became a cult hit among fans and critics alike, so fans are almost certainly eager to see what happened to Eisenberg’s Columbus, Harrelson’s unforgettable twinkie-loving Tallahassee, and Stone and Breslin’s Wichita and Little Rock, respectively.
“This is one of those projects that fans have wanted to see happen for a long time — and no one wanted to see it happen more than Emma, Woody, Jesse and Abigail. These are some of the most in-demand actors, and I think they are making this movie because they love these characters. We are thrilled Ruben was willing to come back to direct the sequel, as his work on Venom has been truly amazing.” – Sanford Panitch, Columbia Pictures President
