Marvel announced Doom Academy, the first tie-in spinning out of the One World Under Doom initiative, during its Women of Marvel Panel at New York Comic Con. The five-issue limited series, written by Mackenzie Cadenhead and drawn by Pasqual Ferry, transitions the Strange Academy to one controlled by Doctor Doom. The supervillain was named Sorcerer Supreme during Blood Hunt, and is now making his move to take control of the Marvel Universe.
Cadenhead spoke about the Doom influence on the book, stating:
“It was really fun to go through old Doom stories and pick out some random characters that exist in that world and find someone or someone’s kid who might be attending Doom Academy. And because the school doesn’t exist, we got to really play with stuff. Pasqual is having a great time coming up with beautiful locales.”
The magical school is transitioning from New Orleans to Latveria, offering the opportunity for more connections to the masked villain. Throughout the series, artist João Lemos will provide sequences tied into that new setting.
Cadenhead continue discussing the added touches that the setting brings to the book, stating:
“In this story, Zoe ends up falling into a strange world that her friends have to help her escape from. We have another artist come in to illustrate this world. João Lemos’ research on Eastern European folklore and fairytales is astounding.”
This series offers just one facet of the wider One World Under Doom, which looks to unite the Marvel universe against the sinister Sorcerer Supreme. Editors and creatives at Marvel have compared the scope of the status quo to Dark Reign, which saw every aspect of the publishing line influenced by the central story.
Marvel also revealed a first look at Pablo Villalobos’s main cover for issue one, alongside variants by Ryan Brown and Woo-Chul Lee. Those covers can be seen below.
