After Marvel revealed the return of the Immortal Iron Fist in a 50th Anniversary Special, the company unveiled a new variant cover for the one-shot by famed artist David Aja. The artist illustrated the series Immortal Iron Fist written by Ed Brubaker and Matt Fraction, which introduced a secret history to the Iron Fist mantle. The run helped to define the modern era of the character, introducing Orson Randall, a gun wielding previous Iron Fist.
In the press release, editor Danny Khazem spoke about the Brubaker, Fraction, and Aja run, stating:
“I knew I wouldn’t be doing this anniversary book justice if I couldn’t get David to come back for a cover! His run with Matt Fraction and Ed Brubaker was a pivotal point in Iron Fist’s history, and inspirational for me as a reader!”
