Marvel revealed more information about Jonathan Hickman and Valerio Schiti’s G.O.D.S. during a retailer video conference on Thursday. The series, which is set to launch October 4, has promised to fill the role of Sandman for the Marvel Universe. The book has been teased throughout the last year, launching with just a tagline of “What happens when The Powers That Be meet The Natural Order of Things?” and promises to explore the crossroads of science and magic.
Over the last few weeks, G.O.D.S. has been teased through series of pages in various Marvel comics like Moon Knight #26, Scarlet Witch #7, and the recently launched Immortal Thor #1.
Hickman discussed getting the opportunity to build out these new concepts and characters in the press release, stating:
“We don’t get a lot of opportunities to try out brand-new properties in the current market. And I think that this represents not just a solid effort by the company but a real swinging for the fence by Valerio, Marte, and I, and everybody involved in the production of the book, to really put something new out there.”
We now know more about the series, as it will spotlight a once hidden and eons-spanning clash between fundamental beings of the Marvel cosmology like Eternity, Infinity, and the Living Tribunal. The bonus pages set out to introduce the key players of the series, like magic wielder Wyn and scientist Aiko Maki. These characters are stepping into the light to interact with the heroes of the Marvel Universe, and warn them of the impending escalation of conflict that could spell doom for reality.
Hickman continues, stating:
“The most important thing is that it is us putting all of our energy and weight into doing something brand-new but is done by a creative team that understands the Marvel Universe and understands the complexity, the continuity, and what it usually takes to make a book like this resonate along with all of the stuff that’s been around for a very long time. We’re just super excited about it. I think Valerio has done amazing work and I feel like I have certainly put my back into it. I’m proud of it.”
Along with the announcement, Marvel also revealed a trailer for the first issue, which showcases never before seen artwork from Schiti and colorist Marte Gracia.
Schiti described the appeal of drawing a series like G.O.D.S.:
“You can lose yourself in these places and these locations. It’s entertaining, and I’m always surprised by how much time I’ve spent on the pages after I finish. This world must seem real. You have to feel like it’s a real place with real people. I love to draw this kind of stuff, this magic and science stuff all thrown together.”
