Simon Spurrier and Matías Bergara Continue Hum’s Story in CODA

CODA returns from GLAAD Media Award-winning writer Simon Spurrier (Damn Them All) and Entertainment Weekly’s 2019 Artist of the Year Matías Bergara (Step By Bloody Step) in September 2023.

In this brand new adventure in the apocalyptic fantasy world of Coda, the despondent bard Hum finds a slice of tranquility with his wife, the Urken named Serka, in an ever-darkening, magic-less apocalypse – or so it seems. Prophecies of paradise and the return of magic? Hum is skeptical, while Serka faces difficult moral decisions on the road, with winter quickly approaching…

Si Spurrier lives just outside London and makes things up for a living. He’s the co-creator of comics like Coda, Step By Bloody Step, Damn Them All, Cry Havoc and The Spire, and has written countless iconic characters in titles like X-Men, The Flash, Batman, Dark Crystal, Ghost Rider, Silver Surfer, Labyrinth, Suicide Squad and many more. He only has nine fingers and his star-sign is gin.

“It’s Coda. It’s Matias. It’s about what happens after the magic dies. It’s about muddling through and giant crabs and accursed moons and love and religion and kamikaze messenger-fairies and foul-mouthed unicorns and trying really really really hard not to go on quests,” said writer Simon Spurrier. “It’s the funnest and most poisonous and best thing to write, ever, and I think it might be our best work yet.”

Matías Bergara is an Uruguayan artist living and working in the city of Montevideo. Dedicated fully to comic books since 2013, he’s authored books, covers and illustrations for BOOM! Studios, Image Comics, DC, Marvel Comics and more. Nominated for Eisner (USA) and the Angouleme Festival (France) awards for his work as an artist.

“Coda has been my absolute favourite book I have ever worked on. I prefer to call it a place, a dimension – one in which a part of me lives day by day in a state of curiosity and discovery,” said artist Matías Bergara. “My greatest joy is seeing people reading and entering into this dimension with us.”

CODA #1 will be available in comic shops September 27, 2023.
