The cast of DC Universe’s upcoming Stargirl keeps on growing as Christopher James Baker (Ozark, Shades of Blue) and Yvette Monreal (Faking It, The Fosters) join the cast as series regulars. Though it hasn’t been revealed who they have been cast as – the series is notoriously keeping wraps on which characters will be inspired by the titular Stargirl to become superheroes themselves – they have been described as undisclosed DC characters.
Based on DC Comics characters, Stargirl will follow high school sophomore Courtney Whitmore, played by Brec Bassinger (The Haunted Hathaways, Bella & the Bulldogs) as the titular superheroine, who inspires an unlikely group of young heroes to stop the villains of the past. The new drama reimagines Stargirl and the very first superhero team – The Justice Society of America – in an unpredictable series.
This is the third live-action incarnation of Stargirl, the first being Britt Irvin’s portrayal of the character on Smallville, followed by Sarah Grey’s take on the character on DC’s Legends of Tomorrow. This version will not be a continuation of either earlier incarnation.
Executive produced by DC Entertainment’s wunderkind Geoff Johns, the character of Stargirl was created by Johns himself in 1999. Modeled on Johns’ late sister – also named Courtney – Stargirl went on to become one of the biggest hit new creations of the late 90s and early 00s. In addition to executive producing the show, Johns will also be writing the pilot episode.
While a solid premiere date has not been given yet, Stargirl is expected to debut sometime in 2019.
