This past Saturday 10th April, Mutant Watch had the opportunity to sit with amazing guest Ariana Maher, letterer on S.W.O.R.D., Demon Days: X-Men, Marvel’s Voices: Indigenous Voices, Hellions, Excalibur, Silk, Prism Stalker, Firebug, between others. Ariana talked to us about everything from her story of entering into professional lettering, the process of coming to work with Chris Eliopoulos’ VC lettering studio at Marvel, and some of the future projects she’s excited and emotional about, like the Pride anthologies at both Marvel and DC.
We dived deep into some of her work including S.W.O.R.D. (for which she took part in some data pages as well), Demon Days: X-Men (including the SFX effects and carrying them within Peach Momoko’s art) and the different between that work and indie work or different formats (like Firebug, which went direct to paperback). The interview closes with Ariana encouraging people that want to get into lettering comics to “know that, as a letterer, you’re not alone, you’re a part of the industry. If you work on a book, you’ve technically broken in. You’re here, there’s no secret barrier. You’re part of the community, and you can reach out to other letterers for help.” You can watch the whole video here:
