The team up team of Nicole Maines, Rye Hickman, Bex Glendining, Rusty Gladd and Sara Miller has given us a little teaser of the upcoming graphic novel Bad Dream: A Dreamer Story in today’s DC Pride (2023) #1 anthology. These few pages pose a tension between Nia Nal’s nightmares and her childhood, and transmit so much into the reader’s mind. It’s obviously chilling to see a trans kid dealing with nightmares in a world that everyday becomes more of a nightmare for kids like the kid I once was, but it’s more chilling (and in a good way) that I know the story that Nicole, Rye and the team are teasing here will not only show a trans superhero, but push against the multiple false narratives that dehumanize us. Some would say I hope too much of a graphic novel, but with the horror of these few pages and the hope I know plagues Nia Nal’s future, I’m already excited for what’s to come.
