The ’90s Return to Hell’s Kitchen With DAREDEVIL: BLACK ARMOR

After the announcement at San Diego Comic-Con, Marvel has revealed more information about the upcoming throwback Daredevil miniseries. Daredevil: Black Armor comes from writer D.G. Chichester with pencils by Netho Diaz and inks by JP Payer. The series will see a return to the Black Armor days of Matt Murdock, filling in the gaps in Chichester’s original run with artist Scott McDaniel.

Black Armor will pit the Man Without Fear against a wide variety of Marvel rogues from the era, including Hobgoblin and Sabretooth. The press release from Marvel describes a story of Matt Murdock tracking down missing people from all across New York, heroes, civilians and civilians alike.

Writer D.G. Chichester discussed returning to Daredevil in the new miniseries:

“If someone told me earlier that I’d have another chance to put on Daredevil’s horns (let alone horns attached to a suit of black armor) I’d have thought they’d taken one too many whacks to the head with a billy club. But apparently my passport to Hell’s Kitchen still works just fine! It’s an unexpected (but welcome!) thrill to visit Matt Murdock’s neighborhood again, and to work with Marvel on going back in time to discover a new adventure for the man without fear.

Chichester initially took over the title from Ann Nocenti in 1991, and was responsible for shepherding the hornhead through a majority of the ‘90s. His run would bring Elektra back to the Marvel Universe, follow up on Kingpin’s machinations post-Born Again, and introduce an evil Daredevil thanks to the events of Infinity War. One of the biggest changes to the Daredevil status quo during the run was the addition of the Black Armor to Murdock’s wardrobe. The suit, made of biomimetic materials, would allow the vigilante to go toe-to-toe with characters like Venom.

Chichester also stated in the press release:

“The Daredevil office has been incredibly encouraging in taking some wild swings with this series. Returning to Matt and Daredevil and that costume where I left them — as the writer I am now — has been an amazing experience. It’s knowing how to jump off a rooftop — but accepting the challenge that you don’t always know where you’re going to land. I hope fans of my Fall From Grace and Fall of the Kingpin stories find more to enjoy in my take on hyper senses and heightened action — especially seen in an entirely new way thanks to the dynamite art and visual storytelling of Netho Diaz and JP Mayer.”

Marvel has also shared the cover for issue one by Mark Bagley and the variant cover from God of War art director Rafael Grassetti, both of which can be seen below:
