100 FAQ On Making Comics

Know the Basics. Avoid the Blunders.

Funding Goal: $5,000
Days Left: 28
Link: 100 FAQ On Making Comics
‘m Shelly Bond and I’ve been reading, editing, and making comics since 1987. So I’ve learned a thing or two. I’ve edited over 25,000 comic book pages for behemoths like DC/Vertigo from 1992-2016, working with legends like Grant Morrison on The Invisibles, Michael Allred on iZombie, and David Lapham on Young Liars. I created and curated Black Crown for IDW, which celebrated the music & comics connection. Most recently, I finished my magnum opus, a graphic memoir editing trilogy that was published through offregister.press — a comics & design lab I run with my husband, artist Philip Bond, for our personal work. I also teach Comics Editing at Portland State University.
I offer you the answers to the top 100 Questions that have been hurled at me over three decades by curious convention-goers, pro colleagues who want to add writing to their repertoire, or creatives from other industries who scream at me, while holding a blowtorch, to reveal the “magick formula” to making comics.

The Little Book of Super Hero Dicks

Dicks as heroes, not dicks of heroes.

Current Funding: $1,358
Funding Goal: $500
Days Left: 13

Richard Fairgray, the deranged mind behind DICKS BY RICHARD, brings you a little book of Super Hero dicks!

To be clear, these are not the dicks of Super Heroes…these are dicks as Super Heroes.

Drawn with love, each dick is pulled from Richard’s memory palace and translated to paper, with attention to detail seldom seen in dick drawings. Click the images to see the originals on his Bluesky account.

Richard has been drawing dicks for years, ever since high school when he would add shading and varying line weight to crude dick drawings on bathroom walls (a hobby he continues to this day). But this new wave of dick based expression all started back in March.

At an after party at FanExpo Cleveland a fan asked Richard to do a sketch on a poster. Richard asked the man what he would like and the man said he didn’t know.

That’s when Richard’s friend Aaron leaned back in his chair and said (loudly), “Richard’s really good at drawing dicks!

That night Richard drew 57 dicks on posters, and DICKS BY RICHARD was born.

Since then, his dicks have become a major part of his sales at conventions, where he offers fully customized dick pics to enthusiastic customers. Dick pics BY REQUEST, of course.

Now, for the first time on Kickstarter, we’re excited to bring you a book collecting all his Super Hero inspired dicks.

Horror Not Hate

An anti-fascist, anti-hate anthology of horror comics and art supporting LGBTQIA+ and Immigrant rights!

Current Funding: $13,720
Funding Goal: $20,000
Days Left: 4
Link: Horror Not Hate

The United States has spun out of control in the wrong direction. Marginalized people have been demonized and their rights are being violently ripped away in dramatic fashion. Writer J.M. Brandt had gotten sick of hearing one gut-wrenching story after another, seeing people being torn from their families and homes, and witnessing innocent folks trying to live their lives transformed into subhuman scapegoats.

Horror Not Hate is a strike back against all this. Slow Feet Comics has brought a collection of diverse talent from both the comics world, and the greater arts and entertainment world at large, together in order to say, “This is madness. It needs to stop. We need to help the vulnerable.”

The end result is a horror comic anthology/art book hybrid bursting at the binding with terrifying tales and cathartic comeuppance. Many contributors are members of the communities that we are looking to support, and several have been nominated by GLAAD for their previous work.

The stories are based around HATE, FASCISM, TRANSPHOBIA, HOMOPHOBIA, XENOPHOBIA, RACISM, and TOXIC PATRIOTISM. HNH features the storytelling talents of David M. Booher (Ghostbusters), Joshua Pruett (The Last Kids On Earth), Riley Silverman (Doctor Who), Rich Douek (Batman: The Brave and The Bold), and more. The stories are brought to life by the visual prowess of Francesca Fantini (Stake), Caleb Ady (In Bloom), Gerald Von Stoddard (Immortal Coil), Rafael Navarro (Bela Lugosi’s Tales from the Grave), and many more.

The Mandawhorian

(Parody/Satire) The newest title from our Star Whores Universe!

Current Funding: $7,814
Funding Goal: $500
Days Left: 12
Link: The Mandawhorian

NE MILLION CREDITS. ONE TINY TARGET. ONE VERY BAD DECISION.

Dinah Djinn is the best bounty hunter in the galaxy—and she knows it. Clad in armor polished to a mirror shine, the Mandawhorian clone takes contracts others won’t touch and walks away richer every time. So when a shadowy client offers a fortune for a “simple retrieval,” Dinah doesn’t ask questions.

She should have asked questions.

Her destination: Naughtyo—where credits and morals go to die. Her target: a pint-sized, green-skinned Force-user named Baybay Hoeda, who’s been enchanting the cantina’s toughest criminals into lovesick puppies with nothing more than a coo and a wink.

But Dinah’s not the only hunter on the trail. A squad of identical rival bounty hunters wants the same prize, and they’re not interested in sharing. What follows is a blaster-blazing, rooftop-leaping, Force-kissing chase through neon-soaked streets—with Dinah discovering that her tiny target might just be the galaxy’s most unlikely partner.

Between a steamy encounter with the enigmatic information broker Zara, a cantina brawl that rewrites the rules of combat, and a mysterious employer whose true motives remain hidden in shadow, Dinah will face the hardest choice of her career:

Complete the contract… or protect the one being who sees past the armor?

Featuring sensual encounters that serve the story, action sequences that dazzle, and the beginning of an unlikely partnership that will reshape the galaxy—The Mandawhorian delivers mature Star Wars parody with genuine heart.

This is the way… with benefits.

“A love letter to Star Wars wrapped in satire, seduction, and surprisingly sincere emotion.”
