The MAGNETO Show – Mutant Watch Ep039

This last Saturday, Mutant Watch was joined by Erik Ojo, black transmasc artist & video content/analysis creator, author of the Magneto & Mental Illness video-essay; Sasha Kaplan, Jewish writer, speaker & scholar of everything comics, as well as Comic Watch reviewer of Trial of Magneto, and Dani Kinney, trans & intersex educator, consultant, sensitivity reader & writer at WWAC, to discuss everything about Magneto, alongside our own Travis and Duna.

Going from Magneto’s potential as Jewish representation and as a challenge to respectability politics, to his complex family relationships (including his relationship with Charles Xavier), the impact of bipolar disorder and C-PTSD in his (sometimes mischaracterized) portrayal, and his relationship with a nation-project like Krakoa, including where we see that going in the future. Some of the books and stories mentioned or discussed are Uncanny X-Men #200,  Avengers: The Children’s Crusade, the short story “Early Thaw” in Marvel’s Voices: Pride, X-Men: Magneto Testament, Howard Chaykin’s Magneto (2011), Cullen Bunn’s Magneto (2014) & Classic X-Men #12 – those last two ones brought previously to the show by Zach Rabiroff in our show about Identity & Reading X-Men -.
