As Solo: A Star Wars Story does poorly in the box office, leaving rumors running wild about the future of other Star Wars Spin-Offs
From the beginning of Star Wars hitting the box office until now, Stars Wars has always appeared to be a hit in theaters, Solo: A Star Wars Story has some of the lowest box office numbers in the history of the franchise. Star Wars Ep VII The Force Awakens reigns as the highest box office hit for the franchise.
Collider reports sources with knowledge about the current situation state that Lucasfilm has put a hold on Star Wars story spin-offs and will continue to focus on Star Wars Episode IX. It is rumored that those who were previously working on Obi-Wan and Boba Fett solo movie are no longer working on the projects. It is unclear how far along each of those projects were.
The debate about why the movie was a disappointment in the box office continues. Some reference it could be due to recent summer hits such as Deadpool 2, and Avengers Infinity War. Another possibility could be many new fans are not as aware of the previous characters and show less interest in those characters origin story. Spoiler alert: When a character is killed off people may be less interested in how their story started. One could say you don’t start with the end of the book and finish the book by reading the first few chapters. This also could be summed up as the ‘Star Wars Story curse’ as Syfy reports that spinoffs even with the previous success of past Star War Story movie, there have been several obstacles that needed to be overcome. Both Solo and Rogue One had to several major reshoots and having to use different directors. The First attempt of a Boba Fett movie was canceled after Josh Trank was let go of the project.
Lucasfilm will be deciding if they want to continue the “look back” style of movies that focus on previous characters or if the company wants to look forward at new projects setting up new adventures. Lucasfilm has not officially given the word about sidelining or canceling any projects at this time. SyFy does report that Lucasfilm is going back to the drawing board, wanting to focus on how they want to market their future movies. There appears to be a big push for re-thinking their current strategies.
Disney will be more selective about the information that is released. It is possible that pending spin-off projects will be lower-budget. Story projects could be made into movies or series for their up and coming Disney streaming services, as one project is currently already in the works for their streaming services. Disney’s streaming service is set to be available in late 2019. In the meantime, the next big project Disney/Lucasfilm is focusing on is Star Wars Episode IX, which is set to release December 20th, 2019.
Solo: A Stars Wars movie was considered a disappointment in the box office in the eyes of Disney/Lucasfilm, the movie still grossed 345.20 million The budget was 275 million dollars. Leaving Disney 79,800,000 dollars richer. By Normal movie standards, it would be considered a success, just not what Disney/Lucasfilm was hoping for. The second lowest Star Wars movie was Star Wars EP V The Empire Strikes Back came in with 534.1 million which is still significantly higher than Solo.
