ULTIMATE INVASION #1’s Cover Game Heats Up With New Russell Dauterman Variant

Marvel continues to tease the return of the Ultimate Universe with the upcoming Ultimate Invasion #1, set for release this June. The series, written by Jonathan Hickman with art from Bryan Hitch, will follow as The Maker (aka evil Mr. Fantastic) continues his machinations to revive the universe that died in 2015’s Secret Wars. Yesterday saw the confirmation that Sara Pichelli will provide a variant cover featuring her co-creation and unofficial symbol of the Ultimate Universe, Miles Morales.

Now, Marvel has shared another variant cover, this time featuring the Ultimate versions of Jean Grey and Wolverine. This variant is illustrated by Russell Dauterman, and features a look at the duo from their earlier appearances in the line’s history. The Wolverine of the Ultimate Universe would die in Jeph Loeb and David Finch’s Ultimatum event, and his son Jimmy Hudson would take the moniker until Secret Wars. Hudson survives the end of the Ultimate Universe, and pops up in X-Men Blue, joining a team made-up of time-displaced X-Men and the Vampire Storm from an alternative timeline.

The road to Ultimate Invasion will start with the Free Comic Book Day 2023: Spider-Man/Venom issue coming out May 6, and then kick off with Ultimate Invasion #1 on June 21. Dauterman’s cover can be seen below, and stay tuned to Comic Watch for more information about the series and its implications for the Ultimate Universe.
