BOOM! Studios and Universal Pictures announced that they are partnering for a film adaption of the time travel action comic, A Vicious Circle. Written by Mattson Tomlin with art and colors by Lee Bermejo, and lettering Becca Carey, the prestige three issue limited series follows as an assassin from the future tracks down his rival, who shares the curse of time traveling every time they kill. The feature adaptation is set for development with Tomlin working on the script – the writer is also a screenwriter whose credits include The Batman Part II – with Black Panther and Creed director Ryan Coogler set to direct.
In the press release, Tomlin discussed working on the adaption, stating:
“Building this world and characters with my partner Lee Bermejo and our friends at BOOM! Studios has been one of my favorite creative experiences to date. It’s rare to be given so much freedom to say what you want to say and to then see Lee bring the world to life so vividly has been a literal mindblower. I’m so psyched to have the chance to watch our characters leap into yet another reality and a whole new medium with a similar mind-bending approach with the help of our friends at Universal and the wizards at Proximity.”
The conceit of the series sees its lead, Shawn Thacker, tracking down his enemy across time and space, going from future Tokyo to 1950s New Orleans, and more. The jumps in time allow for a strong sense of visual styles, as Bermejo takes the opportunity to play with style and color in each sliver of time.
Bermejo explained some of his inspiration for the series, stating:
“Collaborating with an amazing writer and partner like Mattson Tomlin on A Vicious Circle and being allowed by BOOM! Studios to bring that vision to a reality has been one of the most creatively and personally fulfilling of my career thus far. We wanted to create a project that would take viewers on an experience they’d never seen before, and now I’m beyond thrilled to see it take on new life with the visionary folks at Proximity at a fantastic home like Universal,” said A Vicious Circle co-creator, Lee Bermejo.
A Vicious Circle #3 is set for release at comic shops digital platforms on August 7, 2024.
