According to a close friend of the family, Jorge Break, Juan Vlasco passed away on Friday, April 24th, 2020 of complications from his recent appendectomy. The Facebook post from Break came over a week after his passing, once more shaking the comics industry.
Vlasco started his journey into comics in Mexico before bringing his considerable talent and affable personality to the United States. His work can be found stamped in hundreds of comics since his 1990’s US debut, having notably worked for publishers DC Comics, Dark Horse, and of course, 24 years at Marvel Comics. He was a frequent collaborator with artist Paco Medina on Venom, Nova, Ultimate Comics X-Men, USAvengers, and Avengers No Road Home. He most recently was providing inks for the most recent volume of The Magnificent Ms. Marvel.
Comic Watch reached out to another frequent collaborator in Humberto Ramos who shared these words with us:
I knew Juan since college and I always respected his skills and inking talents but something few people knew was the he was a pretty talented penciller as well. He could choose that path and be successful equally. RIP my Vlasco.
