Review

Cops on the streets kidnapping people, a corrupt leader with a deep criminal past, and the rich and powerful calling the shots, it can only mean one thing: Trump’s America… I mean… Daredevil: Born Again Season Two!

Originally conceived as an eighteen-episode continuation of the Netflix series, Daredevil: Born Again underwent a dramatic overhaul after executives decided the initial episodic approach wasn’t working. What ultimately reached audiences was something of a patchwork: a blend of completed episodes from the original version and newly reworked material that leaned into a more serialized format, closer in spirit to the Netflix era. As a result, the episode count was significantly reduced, creating a split structure that eventually brought us to Season Two.

The first season opened with a shocking turning point: the death of Foggy Nelson, Matt Murdock’s closest friend. This decision fractured the central dynamic fans had come to love, pushing Matt away from the Daredevil persona and surrounding him with a largely new supporting cast. As the story unfolded, themes of identity and self-acceptance came to the forefront, ultimately driving Daredevil’s return. Much of this shift was catalyzed by the rise of Wilson Fisk, The Kingpin, as New York’s mayor, establishing a dangerous new power dynamic between the longtime adversaries. By season’s end, Fisk had declared an all-out war on vigilantes, prompting Matt to fully reclaim his role as Daredevil and begin forming a resistance alongside Karen Page.

Season Two opens by revisiting a familiar motif: The BB Report, a grassroots news program run by Ben Urich’s daughter. In one segment, a citizen praises Fisk’s New York as a success story, an optimistic claim immediately undercut by Daredevil’s brutal raid on a weapons-laden cargo ship entering the city. This juxtaposition reinforces the central conflict: Daredevil’s precise, street-level interventions versus Fisk’s expansive institutional power. Notably, the premiere feels less like a traditional season opener and more like a direct continuation of the ongoing narrative. While this likely stems from its origins as part of a longer first season, it never detracts from the storytelling.

One of the more inconsistent elements of Season One was its use of visual effects. The original Netflix series leaned heavily on practical choreography and grounded cinematography, whereas Born Again initially adopted a more CGI-heavy, MCU-inspired style, occasionally veering into the uncanny valley. Based on this first episode, however, the show appears to be recalibrating. The effects are more restrained, favoring the tactile, grounded aesthetic that defined its predecessor. While the action still embraces heightened superhero spectacle, it no longer sacrifices realism. A standout visual flourish, the shifting aspect ratio used to convey Daredevil’s radar sense, also makes a welcome return, reinforcing one of the most inventive stylistic choices from Season One. Altogether, the premiere feels far more cohesive than the uneven, patchwork nature of the previous season.

It was always clear that much of Season One’s new supporting cast was temporary, especially with Karen’s return in the finale. Here, the series begins to merge its old and new elements more effectively, creating a stronger sense of cohesion. Daredevil: Born Again thrives when it bridges these two worlds, honoring its roots while continuing to evolve. That balance is already more apparent in this premiere. Among the new additions, Matthew Lillard’s Mr. Charles stands out immediately, exuding a disarming charm that hints at something far more dangerous beneath the surface.

If this premiere is any indication, Daredevil: Born Again Season Two is already correcting course in all the right ways. By embracing a more cohesive narrative structure, dialing back the overreliance on CGI, and reuniting key character dynamics, the series feels far more confident in its identity. It understands what made the original iteration resonate while still carving out space to evolve. The balance between the old and the new is no longer at odds, it’s finally working in harmony. With Fisk tightening his grip on the city and Daredevil stepping fully back into the shadows, the stage is set for a season that could very well deliver the definitive version of this revival.

Final Thoughts

Daredevil Born Again Season Two starts off very strong by capturing the better elements of the first season and enhancing the narrative in great new ways.
