Ezra: Out for Blood

Ezra (Luke Hutchie) is an out and proud college student, who just happens to be an over 500 year old vampire who only recently left the demonic chains of his home behind to experience the human world. He befriends Gwen Garcia (Daniella Dela Pena) and the two become “besties” as they traverse love and life as college students, while Ezra tries to keep his mass killings a secret from her.  In the meantime, his cousin Aniya (Kara Duncan) discovers his location and begins to hunt for him.  Ezra, in his long life, has never experienced love, and it is the one thing that he envies about humans, and then he meets Ian (Danny Vo) and maybe that is all about to change.  Can Ezra keep his new friends safe from his family and how will they react when they find out he is a cold-blooded predator?  What and find out.

Although this Canadian show was originally released in October of 2022, it has only recently come to my attention.  The show was created by its star, Luke Hutchie who is also given writing credits as well. Each of the 10 episodes of the first season are very short, running under 15 minutes. The plot is intriguing, and the stories are well written with witty dialogue and the actors all do a good job in their perspective roles.  Ezra is somewhat of a stereotypical gay young adult, but not your stereotypical gay vampire, which is part of the charm, the dichotomy between his more personable likeable side and his violent murderous side makes up a lot of the shows subtle humor.  And overall the show is well done.

That being said, I wasn’t really that into it and couldn’t get much past the third episode.   I feel like this production is geared towards a very particular age demographic, that I surpassed long ago.  And if you aren’t in your late teens to mid-twenties, I am not really sure how interested you would be in this series.  As well as the cast performed, I really didn’t associate or like any of the characters apart from Ian, who seems like a really nice guy and probably the best person to teach Ezra about humanity and love. I do applaud the show for shining a light on social issues surrounding diversity and addressing these themes head on with little subtlety. I just want to reiterate, that this show is well done with some good acting, a witty script, and an intriguing plot, it just wasn’t my cup of tea or blood if you prefer.
