Review

My Adventures With Superman episode 3 picks up with Superman continuing to establish himself within Metropolis. This Superman is definitely younger, less confident, and way less trusted than the modern Superman we know today. That being said, Jack Quaid still portrays him in a wonderful manner, filling this version with plenty of gravitas and room to grow. This episode sees his growing insecurities starting to manifest as Lois continuously pressures him into a public interview. Serving as yet another reminder about how inexperienced he is, this interpretation continues to show the stow burn of an origin that has often been blown past in other interpretations.

This episode also continues the trend of re-establishing old Superman villains with a new twist. Intergang appears here, with the spotlight on Silver Banshee and her crew. A lot of the more childish humor appears with this team, as their dysfunction constantly leads to infighting and arguments. The biggest surprise here is the continuation of revamping how these iconic villains got their powers. In the same tradition as the first two episodes, Silver Banshee acquires her powers via some futuristic technology. This departure from the source material may upset some fans but it seems to be in keeping with the themes of the show. Superman clearly has some fear, or at least discomfort, with technology due to his poor experience with his kryptonian ship. That, coupled with the constant visions he keeps getting about some interstellar war with robots, seems to foreshadow the fact that Superman’s origins are going to be a lot more violent than ever before. You should not be surprised if the big reveal is that the futuristic tech being traded around metropolis is built upon a kryptonian foundation, which would kind of tie Superman’s personal life into the greater conflict.

The spotlight of this episode was getting to see Superman fly with Lois in a calm manner for the first time. Their chemistry is the glue of this show and anyone who doesn’t get goosebumps here is lying. It’s amazing to see a version of Lois who is growing at the same rate as Superman, with her not at her full confidence level yet either. This is also a version of Lois who is not immediately in love with Superman. As soon as she sees him, she is very skeptical. There is definitely a lot of room for growth for this character but the journey is definitely one worth taking.

The only nitpick with this episode is that Jimmy is featured mainly in the background. He gets top billing and appears in most scenes; however, he is rarely doing anything more than providing comedic relief. It makes sense when the story starts to mainly unravel around Lois and Clark’s growing romance, but it would be nice to see Jimmy do more. Based on speculation early on, the title, My Adventures With Superman, made it seem like the show would be from an alternative point of view, so having them as predominantly featured characters at all is great.

Final Thoughts

My Adventures with Superman episode 3 shows a Superman who is slowly figuring out who he is while also trying to be a hero. The highlight of this episode is the chemistry and relationship between Clark and Lois, as they both are slowly growing together in a way fans have never seen before.
