What You Should Know:

While on a trip to Mars, J’onn discovers that his father is still alive. He brings him to Earth in the hopes of reconnecting and starting a new life together. He unfortunately also discovers that his father is experiencing periods of dementia and memory loss.

When Sam goes to Lena for help with her own memory loss, Lena discovers that Sam is really Reign’s hidden alter-ego. Lena tells Sam that she will do everything she can to save her. This includes keeping Sam in a hidden medical facility for observation and keeping Sam’s secret and location from her friends.

What You’ll Find Out (Spoilers):

The DEO team are at Supergirl’s apartment playing charades. While playing, J’onn announces that his father Myr’nn is cheating since he’s not only shape-shifting to give out clues, but using his telepathy as well. Myr’nn then says that J’onn saying that he’s cheating is rich, as J’onn used to cheat at their own games when he was a child. When J’onn was caught, he would say that an other-dimensional imp named Zoon would make him do it. Everyone’s laughter is quickly broken when Kara (aka Supergirl) gets a phone call from DEO headquarters. A rogue alien is at the meta-human bar and is tearing up the place. The team gets there in time to subdue the alien, taking her into the DEO for observation.

The team discovers that the alien is a normally calm species with psychic and empathic abilities. They deduce that the alien, named Finhead, was overcome with negative emotions. Her empathic powers were unable to block them out, so she lashed out in anger. They decide to sedate her until they are able to find the source of the psychic disturbance.

Meanwhile, Lena Luthor is still observing Sam at a secret medical facility hidden within the L-Corp building. After running all medical tests, Lena deduces that she must take Sam off of her medically induced coma and reveal what is really happening to her. When Lena tells her that she has been transforming into Reign during her blackouts, Sam tells her that she’s lying and that she wants to see her daughter. Lena tells her that she can’t let her go until they figure out a way to cure Sam from becoming Reign again. Deducing that Sam will only believe what she sees, Lena agitates Sam to the point that she manifests her Reign persona. When Sam comes to, Lena shows her the security footage of Sam becoming Reign and trying to use her super abilities to escape. Horrified, Sam makes Lena promise her that she will keep her daughter Ruby as far away from her as possible, until Reign is finally destroyed.

Winn reveals to Mon-El that he’s repaired his super suit. Supergirl is impressed upon seeing it on Mon-El, telling him that he’s come a long way. They agree to resume their combat training in preparation of the oncoming battle with Reign and the remaining Worldkillers. During their training, J’onn brings his father to the DEO so that he can meditate in one of the unused rooms privately while J’onn works nearby. During his meditation, Myr’nn tries to alleviate his mental deterioration by moving the memories stored in the damaged side of his mind to the non-damaged side. The process causes a negative psychic backlash to the people around him. Supergirl ends up arguing with Mon-El during their training and punches him hard in the chest. Meanwhile, in the central DEO monitoring room, Winn argues with a fellow DEO agent to the point where things turn violent. Seeing what is happening, J’onn uses his mental abilities to learn that the negative actions are being caused by his father’s mental ritual. He temporarily breaks Myr’nn’s psychic broadcast, causing everyone in the DEO to regain their normal temperance, and informs his father on what had happened. Myr’nn is appalled that his son would accuse him of such a thing and refuses to believe that it’s true. Defeated, J’onn confides in his friends that he only recently found his father, but that he feels as if he’s losing him again. Alex and Kara tell J’onn that it’s hard when your parents become the child, but that it’s now J’onn’s turn to change from being the child to the adult before someone gets hurt.

Kara apologizes to Mon-El for hitting him. He asks if they are okay. Kara says things are fine, and that they should resume their training. During the next training session, Myr’nn has another mental breakdown, but on a much larger level. Soon, the entire DEO facility is infected with a psychic backlash that unleashes rage.  In a matter of moments, a huge brawl takes place. Kara resumes her earlier argument with Mon-El, telling him that he was selfish and arrogant when they dated. She says it’s now unbelievable that he could possibly be any different, even though he’s trying to become a hero. Her words obviously hurt Mon-El, but he just stands there and takes it. Elsewhere, Winn goes to as many agents as possible and places psychic dampeners on their temples. Once on, the agents regain their senses. Unfortunately, before the situation can get under control, the psychic backlash manages to affect the DEO alien inmates as well. Several aliens break free from their containment pods, including a brutal White Martian.

Winn and Alex finally get to Supergirl and give her a psychic dampener. Supergirl is mortified by what she’s said, but she and Mon-El put that aside in order to help contain the alien inmates before they can hurt anyone. J’onn goes to his father and tells him that he too must put on a psychic dampener in order to stop what is happening. Myr’nn initially refuses, telling J’onn that he was a prisoner of the White Martians and that he will never be a prisoner again. Myr’nn then sees the escaped White Martian and cries out in fear. J’onn tells Supergirl to watch his father as he takes care of the White Martian. J’onn savagely attacks the White Martian, causing the alien to eventually fall to the floor unconscious. While this is happening, Supergirl rationalizes with Myr’nn, telling him that all of the chaos was caused by his mental outbursts and that the only way to stop it from happening again is to surrender to what must be. When J’onn rejoins his father, Myr’nn tells him to restrain his powers with the dampener, and he does. Ashamed by what he’s caused, Myr’nn apologizes to everyone at the DEO and says he hopes they forgive him. Supergirl tells Myr’nn that there is nothing to forgive and to focus on getting better.

When they are alone, Kara apologizes again to Mon-El. She says that she thought that she had put their past together behind her, but that she obviously was wrong. Mon-El says that he understands and that he agrees that he was a selfish jerk before. He tells her that he’s changed because of her. When he asks if they could possibly still be friends, Kara tells him yes.

Across town, James sneaks into Lena’s office and leaves Chinese take-out for her. Lena sees what he’s done and surprises him. She tells James that it was very considerate of him to do that for her and if he would like to stay and have dinner together. As they eat, James asks her if what they have means anything to her. Lena says yes.

What Does This Mean for the Future?

Myr’nn continues to be beaten down as the season goes on. He starts off as an honored Priest on his world. He then loses all of his family and becomes a prisoner of the White Martians for hundreds of years. When he is finally freed and reunited with his son, he discovers that his mind is deteriorating. Now, in an attempt to save his sanity, his mental abilities are taken away from him. He’s slowly become a shell of the man he once was, and that can’t be easy for him or his son. This is just a very sad storyline that doesn’t look like it’s going to end well.

Kara and Mon-El have finally admitted that their past together still plays a large role in their current lives. Considering that Mon-El is now married to Saturn Girl and is trying to get back to the Legion’s future, it doesn’t look like a happy ending for Kara by season’s end.

Lena’s relationship with James is growing stronger, despite her constant working schedule. The secret she’s keeping from him and her friends though spells doom for the hard-fought relationships she’s cultivated.

Rating: 8/10

Final Thought: Reign and the Worldkillers aside, this is looking to be a very bleak season for the Supergirl series. Between J’onn and his father, Alex and her failed engagement, Supergirl and her feelings for married Mon-El, Lena keeping secrets that will undoubtedly blow up in her face… things just keep getting worse and worse for everyone on the series. I understand that story plots such as these creates drama and intrigue, but at some point, I want to see genuine happiness and prosperity shine through. Supergirl stands for hope. I’m hoping each of the characters finds a little bit of that as the season draws to a close.
