Review
In the fourth episode of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, Jennifer (Tatiana Maslany) is enlisted by Wong (Benedict Wong) to legally stop a stage magician named Donny Blaze (Rhys Coiro) from using actual magic he learned before being expelled from Kamar-Taj for unethical use of magic. Donny never completed his training, so his use of the mystic arts is dangerous. Meanwhile, Jennifer is entering the dating world when she makes a profile on a dating app, but gets no attention until she changes her profile to feature She-Hulk. In the middle of the first good date she has had, Donny opens up a portal that releases dangerous creatures and Jennifer must help Wong put things to right.
I enjoyed this episode more than the last couple probably because more seemed to happen. We get She-Hulk, actually fighting as well as further development of the plot and character. The theme of the episode centered around finding a match, both Jennifer and Wong both find someone, even if it is just temporary. I believe this highlights, in a humorous way, the difficulties of dating in this day and age, and how lonely it is as a superhero. I enjoyed the social commentary of the episode that the sad truth is, no one of real worth was interested in Jennifer as herself, and only interested in She-Hulk, which points to the very visual nature of our society obsessed with looks versus reality. Tatiana is still amazing as Jennifer / She-Hulk tackling both the comedy and drama of each scene wonderfully. I didn’t notice any special effects that stuck out as being completely unrealistic, although it still felt a bit off in certain scenes. The use of absurd comedy, especially surrounding Wong, seems a bit overkill. All the actors have great comic timing, but there just seems to be a bit too much of it.
It was speculated early on, that the character Donny Blaze, would somehow introduce Marvel’s Ghost Rider into the MCU, and that may still be. There was talk of demons and deals made and a lot of fire themed tricks in his “magic show”, but to my knowledge, there is no character in the Marvel Comic Universe named Donny Blaze, but it does seem like possibly a combination of Johnny Blaze and Danny Ketch who both have been Ghost Rider in the comics, and may simply just be foreshadowing of the anti-heroes future appearance. We will just have to wait and see. Rhys is also the husband to director Kat Coiro, who directed 6 of the 9 episodes of She-Hulk.
Final Thoughts
Overall a much better episode than the last two, with some decent action and humor (maybe a bit too much humor).
