Review

After seeing the video of her client in an underground fight-club arena, Jennifer Walters (Tatiana Maslany) confronts Emil Bronsky (Tim Roth), who explains that he was taken against his will, but willingly returned to prison to pay his penance. Who forced his escape?  Well, Wong, The Sorcerer Supreme, did!  In a subplot, former co-worker, Dennis Bukowski (Drew Matthews) seeks a legal case against a shapeshifting Asgardian Light Elf, who got duped out of $175,000, when she took the form of a famous rapper and tricked Dennis into believing he was in a relationship with the famous rapper, Megan Thee Stallion.  Will Jennifer be able to get Bronsky his parole and help her former co-worker get his money back?  Tune in to find out.

I am loving the performance of Tatiana as Jennifer Walters, and the unconventional storytelling of the series, but this episode didn’t really click.  Both the plot and the subplot were implausible, and the humor felt a bit forced and unfocused.  Wong’s Wong just felt wrong.  He was used only for comedic purposes.  Although the actor has great comic timing, it was just a bit over the top here.  The subplot felt unnecessary and detracted from the plotline, and the final scene felt a bit weird and out of character.  We do get our first glimpse of “The Wrecking Crew” who once again were used more for comedy and in no way paid homage to their source material, being portrayed more as bumbling imbeciles.  But their inclusion does allude to a bigger threat yet to come.

I hate to be all negative, but in addition, this was the first time watching, that I really felt that the CGI was unbelievable.  We don’t get a lot of She-Hulk in the episode, but there are a few scenes that looked more like a cartoon than a live action series.  Overall, did I like the episode?  Yeah, it was ok.  It just wasn’t what it could have been and doesn’t really live up to the other Marvel Universe television shows.  The show is farcical in nature and is almost a parody of the MCU as a whole.  It will be interesting to see where this series leads.

Final Thoughts

Tatiana does a great job as She-Hulk, but sometimes she is overshadowed by bad scriptwriting and unbelievable CGI.  I like the show, but I feel like I could have LOVED the show.
