Recap

Spoiler Level: HIGH

The search for Spock finally concludes...but what has happened to him? The Discovery has come across some kind of temporal anomaly rift in space. In order not to get pulled into the rift and to get a probe launched, the Discovery must send in a shuttle to launch the probe. As the most qualified pilot, Captain Pike takes to the job while Section 31 Specialist Ash Tyler insinuates himself as an unwanted co-pilot. Which begs the question...before Pike came aboard what did the Discovery do for pilots on high-risk missions?

Meanwhile, Michael Burnham returns home to Vulcan only to find that her mother, has been harboring Michael's fugitive brother; when Sarek learns of his wife's deceit he is not happy. Spock is in bad shape, battling the demons in his mind is driving him mad. Sarek, citing Section 31's desperation in finding out more about the Red Angel, orders Michael to deliver Spock to them. After turning Spock over to Captain Leland at Section 31, Phillipa Georgiou pulls Michael aside and confirms Spock is in danger. The two then arrange a daring escape and Georgiou lets Captain Leland know "just who is in charge", and in doing so, secrets come to the surface which may have dire consequences going forward.

Review

To Boldly Go From Star Trek The Original Series Season 1 Episodes 11 & 12 “The Menagerie”. After NBC turned down the original Star Trek pilot, “The Cage”, a second pilot “Where No Man Has Gone Before” was commissioned and picked up by the network. A few changes were made to the original, most notably Captain Pike was out and Captain Kirk was in, and there would be no woman featured as the second in command, so science officer Spock also became First Officer. “The Cage” was later shown as episodes 11 and 12 of the first season and retitled “The Menagerie”. Now, the Discovery appears to be on course for a meeting with Star Trek‘s first aliens…the Talosians. And possibly the final fate of Captain Christopher Pike.

Final Thoughts

It looks to me that Captain Pike's pursuit of Spock is about to lead him to his destiny on Planet Talos IV. But how does the Red Angel fit into this, if at all?
