Production Company: Berlanti Productions / Warner Bros. Television

What You Should Know:

While spending time with her mother on Argo City, the last remaining Kryptonian city currently floating deep in space, Supergirl learns too late that the council member Selena is the High Priestess of a dark religious cult. Selena and her coven of followers commandeer Supergirl’s space ship and head for Earth. Now stranded on Argo City, Supergirl and Mon-El must find a way back to Earth to stop the religious fanatics before they can hurt anyone.

Learning that his father is near death, J’onn finally accepts this fact and has agreed to perform a telepathic Martian memory transfer ritual with him called The Reach.

What You’ll Find Out (Spoilers):

Desperate to find out Selena’s ultimate plan, Supergirl, Alura, Mon-El, and Thara go to her home in the hopes that she left a manifesto behind.

Inside they find much religious paraphernalia pertaining to Selena’s cult, which worships dark Kryptonian gods. One item is an empty scabbard, with its sword mate nowhere to be found. Looking at the inscription, they discover that it is a Worldkiller sword. Alura then finds a crystal, which activates and causes Selena to appear as a hologram among them. Alura tells Selena’s astral projection that she and her sister’s shame will follow them no matter what planet they travel to. Selena tells them that she and her cult have been kept in shadows too long and now it’s their time to resurrect Reign. Supergirl explains that she saw Reign destroyed, but Selena tells her that she is only dormant. They plan to return her to power and have her terraform Earth into a new Krypton. Before they can react, Selena causes a bomb to explode in her quarters, which hurts Thara.

At the DEO, Winn shows fellow DEO Agent Demos a new gadget he’s created. By pressing a button on his belt, Winn is wrapped in an energy field that repels objects. He has Demos test it out by having him punch him. When nothing happens, Winn gives Demos a device of his own to use. Winn explains that it’s a new weapon they can use at the DEO now that J’onn has forbid the use of deadly weapons in the field.

At J’onn’s home, he and his father M’yrnn begin The Reach ritual. The process starts with a sharing of M’yrnn’s most recent memories and physical experiences, which then become part of J’onn’s collected thoughts. They slowly work their way backward through M’yrnn’s experiences and on to the other memories he’s collected through The Reach experiences he’s had with others.

The Dark Kryptonians attempt to resurrect Reign on Earth using their magics, but they realize that she isn’t yet fully formed. They surmise that Reign needs the blood of Purity and Pestilence as well. Sensing that their blood still exists, they travel to the DEO to retrieve it.

When the evil cultists arrive, Alex deduces that they are after the blood samples that Lena previously took from the now dead Worldkillers. She sends Demos to retrieve the blood samples and take them to safety while she uses the new tech Winn previously provided her to confront the evil Kryptonians.

On Argo City, Supergirl rationalizes that the witches must’ve had another plan to travel to Earth before she appeared. Alura explains that Supergirl’s father had previously been working on a teleportational device called a Trans-Mat portal, but that he died before it could be completed. Inspecting the device, they discover that it is slightly damaged and can only be used once before it breaks completely. Defeated, Supergirl explains that even if they could turn it on, they need a second Trans-Mat portal to connect to in order to make the jump. Mon-El reminds Supergirl that there is a second Trans-Mat portal at the DEO. Now needing a way to reach the DEO to coordinate the connection, Alura shows Supergirl that they have cache crystals available to them, similar to the one used to connect to Selena. Using it, Supergirl manages to make contact with Winn on Earth, who makes the necessary adjustments to the DEO Trans-Mat portal.

Before entering, Alura changes clothes and tells Supergirl and Mon-El that she’s going with them.

Alex fights valiantly against the dark Kryptonians before Supergirl, Mon-El and Alura show up, but the cultists manage to get ahold of the blood anyway and kill many DEO agents before they leave, including Demos who was killed despite using the new force shield Winn created.

Back at their dark fortress, the Kryptonian witches use the blood of Purity and Pestilence to finally resurrect Reign.

Alive again, Reign is given the Worldkiller sword and instructed to enter the Earth to use it to initiate the terraforming.

She does and earthquakes begin jolting the planet worldwide. The earthquakes knock J’onn and his father out of their Reach ritual before it could be completed. They surmise they are needed at the DEO and forgo completing the memory transfer. Back at the DEO, Lena tells the others that now that Reign is awakened, Samantha is weak and close to dying. Alura explains that in the Worldkiller lore there is a story of a well that provides their cult members life. She says that if Sam can reach the well, she may become strong again, leaving Reign weak and vulnerable. Sam recalls seeing a well in her mental lapses back into the dark plane. She asks Lena to electrocute her to jolt her consciousness back to the dark plane. She does and Sam awakens in the shadowy world while Reign continues to bring about physical destruction to the Earth.

What Does This Mean for the Future?

With Reign tipping off seismic tremors across the globe, her goal to terraform Earth into a new Krypton is very likely. Supergirl and team must find a way to stop them and destroy the dark coven for good.

Final Thought:
I really liked this episode, though I am glad that the rather long and drawn out Worldkiller storyline is finally wrapping up. After seeing Reign finally “die” a few episodes ago and now coming back again, I’m reminded of the quote from Godfather III: “Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in!” And not in a good way.

One thing that bugged me was that the Trans-Mat portal was open for quite a bit of time after Alura walked through it, before finally breaking down. I don’t understand why Supergirl couldn’t have had more Kryptonians go through with them so that they could’ve had a small troupe of Superman powered Kryptonian warriors to outnumber Reign and the dark witches. Other bits of info confused me too, like how Selena could know that Reign’s human name was Samantha Arias and how the witches could teleport out of the DEO so quickly but not teleport directly to the blood samples, which Selena explains earlier that she could sense from miles away. There was quite a bit of convenient quickie wrap up and problem solving methodology in this episode to a level where you notice several occurring, but overall the episode was a fun ride to be on and enjoy.
