The 100 – “Acceptable Losses, Season 5, Episode 07
Airdate: June 19th, 2018
Director:
 Mairzee Almas
Writer: Jason Rothenberg
Based on the Book by: Kass Morgan

What You Should Know:

Echo has infiltrated Prison Crew, carrying Monty’s backdoor code, Octavia now knows the truth about Madi, and Emori and Murphy have taken McCreary hostage. As tensions swell between Polis and the Valley, the players are positioned for a covert war.

What You’ll Find Out:

As tensions mount all across the board, much is revealed. Clarke and Monty discover a nefarious plot by Octavia to plant worms inside of defectors and use them to take out the opposition in the valley. When pressed on the fate of their people in the valley, Octavia calls her former friends, family, and allies “acceptable losses.” This plan is met by opposition from Indra, further widening the growing rift between her and Octavia.

Back in the valley, Prison Crew works to assimilate the defectors, including Echo. Playing Diyoza against Shaw, Echo, and Raven manage to gain access to a terminal long enough to plant Monty’s backdoor code, although this action also results in Shaw being imprisoned with the rest of the defectors, interrupting any hopes Raven may have had to convert him to her side willingly. Raven and Shaw had just had a revealing conversation regarding the reasons Shaw stood with Diyoza and the nature of “Order 11”. The order called for the mined goods to be returned, and the prisoners to be abandoned, an order that prompted Shaw to turn off the prisoner’s collars and allow them to take command of the ship.

Abby continues to struggle with her addiction, prompting Kane to offer her an ultimatum, but before Abby could answer, Diyoza entered the room, finally submitting to being examined. The examination doesn’t take long, however, since the symptoms associated with being about five months pregnant don’t take very long to spot.

This episode also saw the start of Madi’s training, during which both Clarke and Gaia tell her to hold back in order to protect her, but for different reasons. Gaia is still in possession of the Flame, which she shows to Madi. While Gaia states she would never force Madi to take the Flame, Madi’s performance at the trials in front of Octavia could suggest that she has already taken the Flame. Either way, she impressed and/or worried Octavia enough to promote Madi as her Second and ask that they be side by side in the coming the war.

Although that war may not come to pass. Clarke promptly reaches out to Diyoza and Monty cuts the connection to the Eye following the overwhelming evidence that Octavia is too far gone to see reason. In a final twist, the Ark Crew and Clarke decide to take Octavia out, once and for all, in order to peacefully find a way to co-exist with Prison Crew in the valley.

What Just Happened?

As I’ve been predicting for several episodes, the damage to Octavia’s psyche has proven too great to overcome and has united Prison Crew and Ark Crew to work together against her. Perhaps work together is too strong a term, but they certainly share the same goals for the time being. While excellently executed, Octavia’s fall from sanity has been maddening at times.

One other moment worth mentioning, as it has direct bearing on the ideology behind survival, is that Clarke finally gives Monty Jasper’s suicide note. The note reads as many a manifesto that marks humanity as the Earth’s greatest cancer, pointing to the fact that the light at the end of the tunnel doesn’t exist; only the tunnel exists, yielding the next new enemy and the next new war. As the events that are currently playing out progress, Jasper certainly appears to be right about that, forcing Clarke and the others to at least consider the possibility that survival may not be the right thing after all.

Rating: 9/10
Final Thought:
Now that Octavia has been elevated to the position of the Big Bad, it is only a matter of time before Clarke and Octavia are forced to fight it out. Wanheda versus Bloodreina will certainly be one for the record books!
