Review
The Tick is back with a bang as we catch up with our heroes and are introduced to a terrifying new villain as well as Tick’s new… suit?
One thing I loved about this episode was that it managed to give a decent recap of the events of last season without including an actual recap. The episode opens with a dream (nightmare?) sequence recounting Arthur’s history with last season’s villain, The Terror, and continues giving small details throughout the episode to the point that you could start this season with no prior knowledge and only have a few minor plot related questions.
Despite this episode doing such a great job bring viewers up to speed on the events of the previous season, it doesnt linger in the past. The plot progresses in many ways as well. From Dot’s weird experience at the coffee shop, to Arthur’s return to work, to the reveal of the monstrous new villain, Lobstercules; the episode if filled with interesting new plot points and character developments.
The reveal of Lobstercules was very well done and included multiple comic references. Starting with Lobstercules first appearing in a rubber suit which vaguely resembles the containment suit Doomsday wore in the classic Death of Superman story arc and including his henchmen, which resemble something out of Batman ’66 with their somewhat matching fisherman themed outfits… one of them even exclaims “Holy Chowder” upon realizing they’re no match for Tick.
Ticks new suit was also a noteworthy addition to this season. Not only because the less armored look is more true to the comic origins of the character but also because they created a really interesting explaination for the change by having Tick “molt,” shedding the armored pieces of his old suit to reveal his sleeker new suit.
This was a great introduction for a new season that both reminds of of the prior season while laying the groundwork for this one.
Final Thoughts
This was a great introduction to a second season. It both reminded viewers of the first season and set up the plot of the new season; complete with a streamlined new suit and a terrifying new villain for the titular hero.
