This summer DC Comics announced Batman/Superman/Weird Al: World’s Weirdest #1, an all-new 40-page one-shot comic book that brings the World’s Finest together with the one, the only, the undisputed king of musical parody, “Weird Al” Yankovic, for a dimension-hopping adventure unlike anything they’ve faced before.

For longtime fans, “Weird Al” is no stranger (just wonderfully strange) when it comes to comic books. He previously guest?edited an issue of MAD Magazine, bringing his signature off?kilter sensibility to the legendary humor publication, and he recently had cameos on two DC variant covers: the “Totally Normal Al” cover for Bizarro: Year None #1 and a “Weird Al” variant for Batman/Superman: World’s Finest #50, both drawn by Dan Mora

The fifth dimension is being hit with an affliction that turns everything dull and ordinary, but as Mr. Mxyzptlk reaches out to Superman and Batman for help, the same plague has hit Earth!

Batman/Superman/Weird Al: World’s Weirdest #1 is a fun romp across a much lighter look at the DCU and the 5th Dimension.
Mark Waid flexes and displays his versatility as writer as he takes The World’s Finest on an out of this world crossover with entertainer Weird Al Yankovic, best known for his gut-busting parodies of well-known pop songs over the past 50 years. Waid incorporates many fan-favorite DC tropes along with other pop culture references. References include but not limited to:
Red Skies as the Devil appears to a young Al and challenges him to an accordion playing contest (ala Devil Went Down To Georgia), having Superman and Batman facing 80’s versions of Lex Luthor and The Joker, and Flash being an out of shape pickleball player l, John Stewart being an actual cop, and Mr. Meh (Terrific). These not-so-subtle Easter eggs and Mr. Mxy, everyone’s favorite 5th Dimensional imp in tow, give readers a story that doesn’t rely on readers being steeped in recent or past continuity to enjoy the issue.
Dan Schoening and Fico Ossio knock the art out of the park, as they seamlessly provide a diversity of art styles and character designs as reality is warped around the heroes and Al.
The story works well as a oneshot and works better than had it been a limited series. One can hope that this is not the last time that Weird Al makes an appearance in the DCU.
Final Thoughts
Batman/Superman/Weird Al: World’s Weirdest #1 embraces the weirdness and wackiness that Weird Al Yankovic has become known for and pairs it nicely with a lighter side of the DCU sure to entertain readers leaving one hoping that this is not the last time that Weird Al makes an appearance in the DCU.
