Review
Star Wars #1 kicks off the next chapter of the saga taking place in a galaxy far, far away, bridging the gap following Return Of The Jedi and The BattleOf Jakku comic series. Alex Segura returns to his story without missing a beat and some exciting space dogfighting.
The issue sets the stage with three subplots: Luke and Rynn in the far sector of space encountering pirates, Leia on Chandrila, and Han and Valance in the Outer Rim dealing with some gangsters.
Segura uses each of these threads to show that young Republic is still on some shaky ground following the Battle Of Jakku. The Luke/Rynn segments shows the void that more prominently exists due to the strong arm of the Empire and that space pirates are going to continue to be an issue, though doubtfully on the level of The Nihil of the High Republic, although it would be interesting to see if these pirates have some ties to that movement. Leia’s arc shows that the Republic still has a ways to go in winning planets to join the New Republic. This story arc for Leia also shows that she just can’t blast her way out of a conflict, relying instead on her diplomacy skills. It also seems as the seeds are being planted for her forming The Redistance, as seen in the third trilogy. The Solo/Valance thread isn’t connected to New Republic business and seems that Han is lending a hand to Valance trying to collect some bounties, but will probably dovetail into the larger events.
Phil Noto captures the characters and ships with great and clean detail that adds to the story being told and the color palette used for the three story segments help set each of them apart from the other.
It will be interesting to see where the story goes and hopefully mines new ground and corners of the Star Wars universe while filling in the gap in time between the story that has already been told on screen and tbe comic page.
Final Thoughts
Star Wars #1 sets the stage for the forray into the time between the Battle of Jakku and The Force Awakens with a solid start with familiar faces and new threats
