This CARTOONSHOW comic strip omnibus is a nice lean 48 page, 8? X 8? staple bound, full-color printed with soft-touch lamination (outside) comic book for folks that make around $20k per year to read on their lunch break. Also if your parents didn’t pay for your college or if you never had anybody as a co-signer you’ll probably dig it. Well, maybe anybody could enjoy it? idk. Roll it up and shove it in a bottle filled with incendiary liquid for street use. Smack a would be attacker with it. Read it and laugh. Line a birdcage. The possibilities are endless.
Anyways, I’m exhausted. This book is about that. I think most everyone is right now. I want to quit half the time, but I can’t. This book is about that, too. I think everyone can probably identify. What’s the point anymore? I don’t know. But if I can make jokes about being hopelessly poor alone with three kids it helps. And if I can make a real goofy cartoon book about it that’s even better.
I’m fairly certain that I’m the only person making comics about the impossible task of retrieving unpaid child support, stealing pizza from a church to feed kids, or ebt fraud. Maybe? And I’d appreciate your support to keep going and keep the lights on. Publishers and paid venues for cartooning (New Yorker etc) will only run a certain type of “cute parenting” comic. Hunger, poverty, or housing precarity will not be mentioned even though MOST modern American parents are dealing with these things daily. The creators that can afford to take the low wages offered typically don’t deal with this stuff. This type of cultural gaslighting leads to feelings of isolation compounded by feelings of societal abandonment in my humble experience. I really believe this tendency goes beyond comics and extends to nearly all of media as a whole nowadays. The folks running things are too far removed to hear nor process the new average crushing poverty of everyday life. I wish it wasn’t like this, but it seems this is the state of the creative world we live in right now.
The only thing I know to do is to keep making stuff, and by supporting this Kickstarter campaign your help will be making that possible. If this goes well I already have the next 50 page comic nearly ready to go. This will hopefully be the first in a number of collections.

A New World of Monsters
Monsters ain’t nothin’ new.
They’ve been around for at least a century. Even more if you believe in our myths and legends.
But America’s never really had a problem with them. Those were foreign problems that happened an ocean away.
Until now…
DBA’s (Destructive Biological Anomalies) began appearing in greater numbers than ever before on the shores of these United States. And of all places, they picked Texas.
Eventually, the federal government threw their hands up and said “to hell with it.” They just let the monsters have it. Walls went up, no-fly-zones declared, and Texas had fallen.
About 15 years After the Fall of Texas (AFT), things are…different ‘round these parts. Lots of folks got out, but lots of others didn’t. The DBA’s pretty much run things, but that won’t stop crazy 49’ers with more money than sense from coming down and taking a gander for themselves.
That’s where me and my company, Texas Titan Tours, come in!
State of the Monsters is a new comic series created by kaiju comic master Matt Frank (Godzilla: Rulers of Earth, Mothra: Queen of the Monsters, Redman: The Kaiju Hunter). Showdown in the Hill Country is the first book in what will hopefully be a multi-issue series that takes place after the Fall of Texas, where the state becomes a territory utterly dominated by monsters, from the very giant to the tiny-but-ferocious.
A lifelong Texan, Matt has channeled the unique cultural experience of living in the Lone Star State into a sequential storytelling project that has been simmering for the last 5 years. Now, with the help of Laguna Studios and YOU, the kaiju-comic-loving fans, Matt can finally bring this new reality to life.
State of the Monsters: Showdown in the Hill Country is over 40 pages, with the intent of creating a movie-style story set in the SOTM universe. Inspired by the classic kaiju movies from the “Monster Boom” of the 1960’s, each SOTM issue is planned to be set in the same universe while focusing on different characters and events. There will of course be connecting threads, but like the Showa-era Toho films of Ishiro Honda and Eiji Tsuburaya, each story can be read as a stand-alone experience.

HOMAGE COVER
First and foremost we have an awesome cover by EV Cantada, with coloring by Zac Atkinson, and design by Tom Napolitano. It’s an homage to the iconic Batman: The Killing Joke — We thought the connection was perfect for the photo-taking Kolchak, and it couldn’t have come out better.
NEW STORY
There’s also new content. The original graphic novel was supposed to have a bookend story that would connect all the stories in the anthology, but the artwork didn’t come in time so we scrapped. Now, with art by Cantada and words by James Aquilone, we included it the new Monstrous edition. Check out a preview below.

Another piece that was intended for the original edition was Kolchak historian Mark Dawidziak’s essay about his friend Jeff Rice, the creator of Carl Kolchak.

DENIS KITCHEN: Three Comics Collections
Three risograph-printed issues collecting underground cartoonist Denis Kitchen’s comics from the 1960s through today.
Risography printing is sort of a cross between screen printing and duplicator machines you find in offices and Kinko’s. It was originally intended to be an inexpensive way of color photocopying for schools and businesses back in the ’80s, but artists have found it an invaluable tool for creating art prints, ‘zines, comics, and more.
Riso machines print one or two colors at a time using plant-based inks resulting in an imperfect charm: ink texture and misregistration make each print one-of-a-kind!
