For the first time ever in softcover, Stan Lee and John Romita’s THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN NEWSPAPER COMICS returns to print in Clover Press’s spectacular new line of deluxe slipcase editions!
The Amazing Spider-Man swung into newsprint on Monday, January 3, 1977! The web-slinger’s daily strip brought Marvel’s most popular hero from comic pages to newspapers worldwide. Through Stan Lee’s storytelling and John Romita’s masterful art, the strip delivered dramatic storylines that pitted Spidey against classic foes while introducing brand new characters…like The Rattler! In doing so, the strip helped make Spider-Man a household name beyond the comic book stands.
The Library of American Comics remastered and collected the strip in a series of hardcover collections, many of which are out of print, and highly sought after. Now, Clover Press and The Library of American Comics are bringing the collections back to print in an affordable softcover format!
We’re collecting the strip strictly by year, reprinting each installment from January 1 to December 31. Each volume will measure 11″ x 8.5″ in a horizontal format. Additionally, each book will slide into a vertical slipcase, designed for protection and easy shelving.

Each issue of the Courier is writer-driven, which means that our writers choose their own topics based on their own comics-related interests, so you’ll find a diversity of types and eras of comics written about in each issue.
Our third issue will be packed with great essays, reviews, and interviews from comics critics and journalists, Susana Polo, Jeremy Dauber, Sara Century, Claire Napier, Zack Deane, Kate Tanski, Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou, Oliver Sava, Benjamin Clark, Steve Morris, David Harper, and Tiffany Babb.
Like with our first two issues (which you can pick up here or as an Add-On to your pledge), we are aiming to create a new space for vibrant and rigorous writing about comics in print form as well as a slower, more intentional reading experience for those who love comics criticism like we do.

Evel is one of the most iconic characters in American history. A folk hero in the truest sense of the word. Well, we’ve leaned WAY the hell into that here.
I’m a screenwriter by trade. For over a decade, I’ve made my living writing smart, mind-bending action thrillers for directors like JJ Abrams, Ridley Scott, Justin Lin, John Woo, Luc Besson, and F. Gary Gray, so I can’t help but think of things in cinematic terms. Our original mandate here was to make Evel an adventurer, to find this character’s Smokey and the Bandit or his No Country for Old Men. And I think we ended up with something pretty damn incredible.
We see this story as a modern Western. Some fit of terrible befalls a community. Evel is the swaggery gunslinger who rides in on a steel horse, howling at the goddamn moon and solves the mystery, runs the bad guys out of town, and beds the local bombshell.
Fiction aside, we went out of our way to honor the actual history. This first story arc of the series – titled THE LAST GLADIATOR – will start with Evel crashing at Caesar’s. We’ll be there when he goes from relative unknown to stratospherically-famous, essentially overnight. It’s then, when he has the entire world’s attention that he boldly declares that he’s going to jump Snake River Canyon.
We’ll also see him brawl with more bikers at the Cow Palace in San Francisco… we’ll be there for his wonderfully infamous “million dollar party” in Butte, Montana… we’ll see him win bets, bed woman, and fight jerks in bars… we’ll see him jump just about everything a lovable lunatic could on a motorcycle… and we’ll adore him for it.

Quaintance is now an editor at The Beat, winner of this year’s Best Comics Journalism Eisner. And artist Anna Readman is a recent winner of the prestigious Observer/Faber graphic short story prize.
This issue — the first of four — is already done and will go to press ASAP with help from your pledges. Additional money raised will go toward off-setting production costs, and, ultimately, funding Macabre Valley #2.
