The biggest villain Spider-Man needed to beat for Brand New Day wasn’t the invisible telepath, The Hand or Scorpion — it was the alleged “superhero fatigue” and ‘genre exhaustion’ that could hinder the film’s success. Marvel would not let the film’s success be derailed by the industry’s lack of enthusiasm and momentum regarding superheroes; instead, they chose to focus on the person behind the mask — this is more of a Peter Parker film than a Spider-Man one, and that is one of the aspects that made it a massive success.
Sony is estimating that the film will bring its North American total to an impressive $653 million by that Sunday, giving it the highest 10-day domestic sum in box offices, according to The Hollywood Reporter. It became the fastest title to reach the half-billion mark by surpassing Marvel’s own Avengers: Endgame. Again in direct battle with Endgame, Spider-Man: Brand New Day’s $360 million gross surpassed the 2019 blockbuster as the biggest United States opening weekend of all time.
Now, what made this “overwhelming” — in the words of Kevin Feige to Variety — success possible?
One of the reasons is surely the mystery surrounding Sadie Sink’s character; casting an actress as talented and pivotal as Sink and not revealing her character will get the audience speculating. Only revealing her character in the film was a way of creating the “best possible opening weekend experience for the audience”, according to Feige. Spider-Man: Brand New Day finds the perfect and most fitting way to introduce a character that “has immense significance within the universe, and plays a key role in the future of the MCU.”
Feige also highlighted the importance of other films, such as The Odyssey and Toy Story 5, in reigniting the power of a shared experience.
The careful and cohesive assembly of an interconnected universe also stood out to fans — cameos in the style of the Infinity Saga, including Frank Castle, Bruce Banner and Yelena Belova, made the MCU New York make sense in terms of a shared city, connected to many stories. Moreover, the portrayal of Banner’s arc seemed especially careful and honored the legacy of a character that has been stuck in an internal battle for over a decade.
Spiderman: Brand New Day also remarkably features universally relevant themes, such as grief, loneliness, responsibility and identity. These are a way of ensuring everyone in the audience feels connected to Peter Parker and other characters in one way or another. The movie follows a current trend in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, of portraying the more human side of superheroes — which is done brilliantly not only in this film, but also in Thunderbolts* (2025), The Fantastic Four: First Steps (2025) and Wandavision (2021).
With all this in mind, it seems natural that a movie which allows fans to see remarkable action scenes, a functional script and to connect so deeply with its characters would reach this level of success. The film’s reception came at a crucial time too — the expectation for Avengers: Doomsday is higher than ever. After a few years of instability and uncertainty, it is surely a brand new day for the MCU.
